THE LOTT 13 GANG

By Martinez

In East Los, the 70s was filled with Varrio warfare and much blood shed, then by the end of the decade, the violence began to drop big time. A combination of factors were attributed to the decline; Vatos getting caged-up, community groups organizing gang meetings persuading many to stop killing each other, and many more Homeboys getting tired of the funerals; along with many other arguable reasons. Lurking behind this relatively calm were a new breed of gangs “THE STONERS.” This is a true story of how one of those Stoner gangs was born on the East Side of Los.

In the mid to late 70s, a new street gang phenomena occurred in East Los, the Stoner generation began. During this time, many of the old established Cholo gangs had died down tremendously. There were few numbers of Veteranos left in the neighborhoods; most were locked-up or had moved out of the line of fire to other communities and away from the madness in an effort to make a better life for their familias. Those who were left were for the most part strung-out on heroin (tecatos). The life of a tecato was very unappealing to most of the youngsters coming up in the Barrios, and the result was that this younger generation banded together as Stoner Gangs that chose to get stoned on yesca, pisto, pildoras and frios, and even some acido, pero nada the carga. Heroin was a straight-up nel-chale with this new crowd who witnessed the effect that chiva would do to a man; degrading him to a low-status, a lo mas bajo.

In 1977, Living On The Top by City Terrace Park, in the neighborhood behind Van Pelt Avenue where there was this big spacious hillside, in-between Gifford Street; that the youngsters called THE LOTT; was the original birthplace of THE LOTT STONERS Gang. During these times, there was no recruiting by the old established Cholo gangs in the area. The Hole Stoners were in El Hoyo Maravilla territory, the Humphreys Stoners were in Lopez Maravilla. There were no youngsters from Rock Maravilla, and in the Maravilla Projects only the High Time Stoners were around. The early 80s brought in the Rascals 13, Hick Boys 13, The Slows 13, FTW Stoners, The Hill 13 and The Crazy Stoners, and out of Varrio Nuevo Estrada came the Stoners 13 Locos. But the biggest of all the Stoner Gangs in East Los was The Lott Stoners, with well over 100+ members, all youngsters and all very active.

Geraghty Loma was on the opposite side of City Terrace Park and inactive at the time because they had no youngsters on the street representing. The Lott Stoners filled the void and covered a huge chunk of territory that stretched from Gage Avenue on the west, the 710 freeway on the east, Brooklyn Avenue- (re-named Cesar Chavez Avenue) –in the south, and City Terrace Drive on the north; with THE LOTT 13 Gang holding down all the hills above the park which was their main hangout but with other hangouts in place on Hammel Street, Fisher Street, Bonnie Beach Place, Record Street, Blanchard Street and even in Boyle Heights on Alma Street. Eventually the heart of the Varrio moved down the block to the area were Brannick and Blanchard Streets meet; here is where it is still to this day considered the main Hood.

The Hole Stoners, Gage Boys, High Time Stoners and Folsom Street Locos were the main enemies at the time. All beefs between rivals were settled the Old-School way- a puros trancasos –proving yourself with your fists. There would be fights with these rivals at Belvedere Junior High and Garfield High, at the Flat Tops, East L.A. Skills Center and where-ever our paths would cross. Obviously, like all other gangs, TLS13 Locos got involved in crimes like grand theft auto, bike stealing and slanging drogas; and as Homeboys began getting busted and doing time en la torcida, their look gradually became more in-line with the traditional Cholo style. Homeboys started stamping TLS13 or LOTT X3 on their bodies and they became even more hardcore in the gang life. By the mid 80s, THE LOTT 13 had fully evolved into the traditional Varrio Gang Style and joined up with the madness that comes with it.

Around the late 80s, all the Olden Varrios in East Los started recruiting into their Hoods all the Stoner Gangs and Tagger Crews that had recently popped-up on the street scene. The traditional enemies of THE LOTT got jumped into mostly the Maravilla Varrios. The Hole Stoners cliqued up with El Hoyo Maravilla, The Humphreys Stoners joined Lopez Maravilla (some joined TLS13), High Times Stoners became High Times Maravilla and Rascals 13 became Rascals Maravilla. Others like Gage Boys & Folsom Street Locos cliqued up under Gage Maravilla or into Maravilla Rifa; with the only exception being the Stoners 13 Locos whom remained their own gang. All the rest by joining the MARAVILLAS and because of the green-light edict by La eMe in 1993 brought the rivalry between TLS13 and Las Maravillas into a new age filled with violence. However, even in adverse times, and sometimes overwhelming odds THE LOTT X3 Gang continues being on the forefront of the East Los gang scene.

Merwin Street, that’s where the BDS name came up

THE ALLEY ON MERWIN STREET HAD BEEN KNOWN AS THE "BLACKDIAMOND" BECAUSE AT THE FAR END OF THE APTS, STOOD A BLACKDIAMOND MADE OF BRICKS IN THE CEMENT. THE OG CAMARADAS USE TO CHILL THERE IN THE EARLY 1980s, SO THAT’S HOW THE NAME CAME UP FOR THE KLIKA. BUT LATER ON, THE BRICK BLACKDIAMOND WAS JACKHAMMERED OUT BY LAPD AFTER A FEW MURDERS HAPPENED THERE DUE TO GANG ACTIVITY.

WE PUT MEXICAN KLAN PORQUE SOMOS PROUD OF BEING MEXICANS

Most people think that because its Mexican Klan, that the initials are MK. Its never been MK, its always been MKN

It is ~> M K N. ~> EME KA ENE
M is for Mexican, K is for Klan, and the N stands for the last letter in KlaN ~> MKN "Nomas" !!! Solely MKN !!!

Back in the days, when it was a street football team/possee, MKN had skaters, taggers, heavy metal dudes, and even gangsters that were from MKN. That's one of the reasons that some said said that MKN were taggers, because they had people from tagging crews associated with MKN and members would strike it up in tagger style letters. MKN was started because in those days everyone in Los where from somewhere. Whether it was a gang, tagger crew, party crew or whatever, but at the point of it was that if you were proud to be Mexican, then why not be from Mexican Klan. It was supposed to be just a bunch of youngsters who wanted to belong and hang out together. It was said as a joke but eventually the name was kept when it was created; to have the posse be called Mexican Klan. The Klan, was of course taken from the Klu Klux Klan; Klan equals = familia, a familia of Mexican youngsters from the streets of LA; hence the name ~> Mexican Klan !!!

WEST SIDE MEXICAN KLAN

HERE'S A LIL' HISTORY ON THE N'HOOD.... THE KLAN STARTED IN THE LATE 1980'S AS A BUNCH OF HOMIES THAT FORMED TO PROTECT EACH OTHER FROM THE MAYUGAS THAT WERE ALWAYS MESSING WITH THE RAZA. IT WAS NOT A TAGGING CREW OR PARTY CREW; WE USE TO SAY IT WAS A POSSE. THE KLAN HAS ALWAYS HAD NICKNAMES AND YOU HAD TO GET JUMPED IT TO BELONG. OUR NICKNAMES WERE GIVEN TO USE BY A CERTAIN CHARACTERISTIC THAT WE HAD (EX. SLEEPY, LEFTY, CHINO). THE KLAN HAS ALWAYS HAD DIFF CLICKAS, SOME OF THE FIRST ONES WERE THE BUDLONG LOCOS BLS (LOCATED IN THE HEART OF HPS HOOD), THE 37ST DUKES DKS (37ST AND NORMANDIE), NOTORIOUS BAGOS NBS, AND THEN CAME LOS TRAVIESOS LTS (LOCATED ON BROWNING AND DENKER NEXT TO SOUTHWEST PD). WE GREW IN NUMBERS AT MANUAL ARTS HS AND FOSHAY JH. OUR NUMBERS WERE OVER 150 STRONG. SINCE WE WERE NOT A GANG WE WOULD WELCOME ANYBODY THAT WAS DOWN FOR THEIR SHIT...WE HAD TAGGERS, ROCKERS, GANGSTERS, AND REGULAR FOOLS. WE USE TO PLAY FOOTBALL AGAINST ANYBODY THAT WOULD STEP UP, CREWS, GANGS, ANYBODY. WE STARTED TO HAVE PEDO WITH OTHER GROUPS AT MANUAL ARTS.....BELIZIAN POSSE BZP, 4PLAY POSSE 4PP, INVASION OF PRIVACY IOP, DOWN FOR ANYTHING DFA.....THEN IT STARTED WITH AN MARA SALVATRUCHA CLICK THAT WAS ON KING BLVD AND NORMANDIE. AT FIRST EVERYTHING WAS JUST FIST AND KICKS FIGHTS AND CROSSING EACH OTHER OUT, BUT THEN IT BECAME MORE SERIO. THE KLAN AND THE HARPYS WERE PRETTY CLOSE TO EACH OTHER AND AFTER THEY SEEN THAT WE COULD HOLD OUR OWN WE WERE ASKED TO BECOME A CLICK OF HPS (MIDNIGHTS). WE PUT IN OF FOR AS LONG AS WE COULD UNTIL THE PEDO WAS FORCED UPON US TO START IT AGAINST HPS. THATS WHEN WE DECIDED TO SAY FUCK IT AND START LETTING ANYBODY HAVE IT THAT WANTED SOME. ALOT OF THE KLAN MEMBERS DIDN'T WANT TO START ANY MAJOR PEDO SO THEY GOT OUT...WITH THAT OUR NUMBERS BECAME A LIMITED FEW AND HAD TO STEP IT UP EVEN MORE.....IT WAS THE WHOLE LTS LOCOTES CLICK, HALF OF THE DKS DUKES, AND A FEW BLS BUDLONGS, THE NBS NOTORIOUS BAGOS COMPLETELY GOT OUT. LITTLE BY LITTLE THE HOOD BECAME SMALLER, WE STARTED TO GET PUSHED MORE TOWARDS DENKER AND BROWNING. HOMIES STARTED GETTING LOCKED UP, HOMIES STARTED PASSING AWAY AND THE WEST SIDE MEXICAN KLAN BEGAN TO GET SMALLER. AS WE GOT A LITTLE OLDER AND EITHER MOVED AWAY OR GOT BUSTED OR GOT KICKED OUT BY THE CITY OFFICIALS DUE TO THE TOO MANY BALAS FLYING AROUND OUR APARTMENTS, THE KLAN GOT EVEN SMALLER. WE RECRUITED A FEW YOUNGSTERS THAT PUT IT DOWN BUT IT WAS NOT ENOUGH TO KEEP IT TO THE FULL STRENGTH THAT IT ONCE WAS, EVEN SO WE'RE STILL LETTING IT BE KNOW WHO WE ARE AND WE'RE STILL HERE BLASTING., SERVING IT UP!

EAST SIDE MEXICAN KLAN

3 OF THE DKS MOVED TO 47TH AND CENTRAL AND STARTED TALKING TO A CREW CALLED ACG(ALL CITY GANG)...THIS CREW WANTED TO GET CLICKED UP....BUT THE DKS THAT WERE THEIR DIDN'T HAVE ANY KIND OF RANK SO THEY CALLED THE LTS FROM THE WS AND TOLD US TO HANDLE THAT PEDO. WE SET A MEETING WITH THE ACG AND SAID THAT IF THEY WANTED THEY COULD BECOME A CLICK. AFTER THEY TALKED IT OVER WHICH EACH OTHER THEY DECIDED TO GET IN AND CHANGE IT TO CGS (CRAZY GANGSTERS). THE KLAN THAT WAS IN THAT AREA ALSO GOT BUSTED OR MOVED SO THE EAST SIDE WAS MOVED TO 47 AND BROADWAY WERE WE RECRUITED MORE MEMBERS AND STARTED THE NLS (NIGHT OWLS). EVEN THOUGH THE LTS WAS A WS CLICK, SOME OF THE CRAZIER YOUNGSTERS ALSO STARTED IT ON THE ES OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE ONES THAT HELD THE KLAN ALIVE FOR MANY YEARS.

WELL I THINK THATS IT.

~x V N E x~

It is said that this Barrio’s beginnings are traced back to the 1940's HUNTER STREET GANG in Boyle Heights. Some members of this gang were relocated to the Estrada Courts Projects government-subsidized housing when the Santa Ana Freeway was built, destroying their homes. Until that time the Projects had been inhabited by working-class Mexican-American families and lower-middle-class Anglos.

By the start of the 50s, with the settlement there of gang members from Hunter Street, and with the transient nature of in-and-out residents of the Projects, there emerged a gang that became known as VARRIO NUEVO. Later the gang added the ESTRADA name part of the Projects (ECTS was actually a seperate varrio in the beginning, known as Estrada Courts/Eastmont courts) –thus Varrio Nuevo Estrada was born.

Because the complex was so large (more than 500 units), and the rents were lower than other nearby housing, there was an abundance of low-income families with a large number of youngsters who continuously moved in, these would add large numbers of members to the rank and file of the gang. Many same age cliques were formed, and sometimes these cliques had conflict with each other, however older veteranos intervened to cool off the younger heads and reminded them that they belonged to the same barrio.

The barrio became so large and strong that it has expanded beyond its original boundaries (the Projects) to incorporate contested areas.
Varrio Nuevo Estrada is now one of the biggest barrios in East Los Angeles.

FSL
A true East Side Story

In the late 70’s /Early 80’s a Stoner gang was formed in East Los called Folsom Street Locos.

FSL-13 was named after the main street where they held down, slanged loquera and represented.

During this time, FSL 13 was a popular spot to score frio’s , as they had the "bomb jugo".

Most locos/party jente in East Los unicorp. would get their jugo from Folsom St.

just like most of the Boyle Heights section of East Los got their jugo from Fickett St.

FSL came up big time from the profits of selling jugo. One of the first Stoner varrios to slang and start high rollin.

This was many years before crack cocaine was introduced to Los Angeles street scene.

FSL 13 were Chicano Rock n Roll gangsters, and were known as "snappers" as they would love to fight other Stoner hoods.

Folsom Street Locos was the first vatos, I personally ever saw, in East Los, who when they mobbed to say a "feria/carnival"

They would go deep. At least 40 - 50 heads and all of them wore a dark navy-blue football jersey that read:

Folsom St. Locos on the top portion of the jerseys and their placaso/nick name on the bottom of the jersey.

I would be lie-ing if I said I wasn't impressed. At that time (pre-rock cocaine) there were no real high rollers in East Los.

I had not seen any Chicano Stoner or Cholo gang do this before: Where every single member was is in uniform represting. This was the early 80's.

From my personal experience with these vatos, they were down vatos and would go toe to toe with rivals.

Even though they were rivals to my varrio: THE LOTT STONERS~SURENOS 13.

I considered Folsom St. Locos on the same level as us (TLS-13) as far a level of organization, riders, and dedicated soldiers.

Towards the latter part of the 80's, When the olden East Los varrios began recruiting all the Stoners and Taggers (who had just recently popped into the gang scene, The main heads from Folsom St. Locos got into Maravilla Rifa (MVR)

Because the main heads got into MVR, the rest followed suit.

To the best of my knowledge, the name Folsom St Locos was not used as a clica and the name vanished from the East Side altogether.

It is my personal opinion, the right after THE LOTT, Folsom St Locos was one of the craziest, downest Stoner varrios around during the Stoner Era. Even more so than Stoners 13 Locos (S13L's).

WHITE FENCE

By GIBBY
May 11, 2004

A HISTORY OF THE BARRIO WHITE FENCE

In the 20s, Boyle Heights was populated by Anglos, Armenians, Jews, Italians and Japanese. Many “new” Mexican immigrants to California and some of them found their way into communities like Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles. The Mexican section of the Boyle Heights, which was very small, was bounded by 4th Street to the north, Whittier Blvd to the south, Euclid Ave to the west and Lorena St to the east. It was a very close knit community. Everybody knew each other from the neighborhood and almost every Mexican family attended the local Catholic Church which was called La Purissima. La Purissima Church was the heart and focus point of the community. It not only served as a spiritual center but as a social center as well. The leaders of the Church sponsored an athletic club to foster brotherhood and friendship among the Mexican/Chicano minority members within the community.

During the 1920s and 30s there was a lot of racism and violence towards Chicanos and Mexican immigrants in the Boyle Heights area. School aged children were regularly harassed and bullied by members of the larger ethnic groups. Working men did not have the ability to defend their children while away from the home and most Police at the time did not care what happened to "lil Mexican kids". The younger boys in the community decided to form a self protection group which would serve as escorts to and from school for their younger brothers and sisters. This group became known as LiL Fence or The Fence . The name had a dual meaning. Many of the houses in the "Mexican" section of Boyle Heights had White picket Fences along the front portions of homes and walkways plus the City of Los Angles erected a long row of White Fences along Whittier Blvd. Also a Fence is both symbolic and practical as a means of self protection.

The Fence began to become a presence on the street corners of Boyle Heights. There were many clashes and bloodshed through out the streets of Boyle Heights during these times. The original group or "OGs" were very successful in assuring that no children would become victims of random acts of violence at the hands of other ethnic groups. As time passed they began to rival with other chicano groups that sprouted up in various parts of Los Angeles. Some of the other "clubs" had names like Alpine St, East Side Clover, Primer Flats, Clantone 14, Diamond St, and EL Hoyo Maravilla.

During the next couple of years White Fence slowly moved from self protection group, to aggressive barrio gang. By 1939 The Los Angeles Times was writing articles about the "White Fence Gang" which murdered 2 males and left their bodies along Whittier Blvd. White Fence was one of the barrios in Los Angeles to actively participate in the Zoot Suit Riots and target marines and sailors that invaded the barrios to victimize "Mexicans " in "Zoot Suits" who were deemed foreigners and unpatriotic. This was from 1942-43. White Fence is still a very active barrio and is well respected in the streets and prison system. Many things have changed in the neighborhood since the early days in the 1920s till now. The neighborhood, WF, has been featured in many movies, books, documentaries, videos etc. Much of the modern "gangster style" (Dress, Graffiti, Slang, Low riders) originated in the White Fence barrio. White Fence has other clicks in Hollywood, Bell Gardens, Alhambra, San Gabriel Valley, Las Vegas, El Paso and Florida. I was a very active member of White Fence The Hole Locos during the late 80s and early 90s. I believe the initial intentions were a very positive and necessary move, although I can no longer consider myself an active member due to the continuous senseless violence that plagues the barrio and other barrios and ghettos in this world. I am not attempting to glamorize the hood or gangbanging but present an accurate picture of real and true barrio history.

~WEST SIDE WHITE FENCE~

I don’t know all the details on how West Side White Fence started. From what I do know, it was started by the TINIES clika who moved from the Eastside to the Westside’s Echo Park area and, started the wsWF between the years ‘74 and ‘76.
The West Side TINIES hung around in Tiny Alley near Echo Park, and also on a tall hill in an industrial area which they re-named it as “Blueberry Hill,” because it reminded them of their former one in the Eastside's also known as "Blueberry Hill."
The wsWF was originally located around the area where the West Side Mayberry Crazys Hood is up nowadays -off Alvarado. The WF LOCOS from here then spread to the Hollywood area. I’m not sure when they moved to East Hollywood but it was by the year ‘80 for sure.

SCALON CALLE A

VARRIO SCALON CALLE A from CHIQUES

INITIALS “SC” and "SCxCH"

The SCALON name started out as “ESCALON” meaning a “STEP”, but in time La Raza morphed the name into SCALON.

It originally meant a “STEP” away from La COLONIA de CHIQUES

CHIQUES is a Pachuco Raza term of endearment for OXNARD. All the Varrios in Oxnard can use it in their varrio name and placasos.

But La COLONIA is only a section of Oxnard on the east side of town, and COLONIA CHIQUES is only just one of the many Varrios within the city limits, so don't get it confused because COLONIA does not equal all of CHIQUES.

How did Oxnard get its moniker of Chiques?

In the 1930’s and 1940’s the drug trade and crime grew in Oxnard, and people began making references about Oxnard's Colonia comparing it to the gangland city of Chicago. This seemed to be rooted in several theories. One was the expanding drug trade and a growing belief that Oxnard was a major drug distribution point for southern California that stretched to the city of Chicago. There was also some migration of families who had arrived here from Chicago. Finally, there was also a proud belief by Oxnard’s underworld that their criminal activity paralleled Chicago, including the gangster culture made famous by Al Capone. People from Colonia began unofficially referring to their neighborhood as “Little Chicago”. “Little Chicago” morphed immediately into the Spanish Calo version “CHIQUES” which means Little Chicago.

Over time Chiques became a reference to not just La Colonia but to the whole city of Oxnard. Some even tattooed “Little Chicago” on their body. Chiques ultimately became attached to most of Oxnard’s Varrios.

La COLONIA is where it is said to have all started in regards to the Chiques Varrio gangs; that’s where all the Mexicans lived back in the days, in that Colonia neighborhood on the east side of town. Colonia kind of looks like a little East L.A. and even La Colonia’s Felisha Courts projects look like the the Aliso Village projects of East Los.

When Little Chicago was changed to Chiques, La Raza didn’t say Colonia Chiques, they just said Chiques; they in no way referred to themselves as Colonia. When the first chicanos moved out of there to Hueneme or to the south side of town, they referred to themselves as from Escalon, meaning a Step away from Colonia; that's when those living on the old east side of Oxnard started referencing themselves as from La Colonia Chiques, but those from Hueneme and the south side, also known as Escalon started to claim Chiques in their name before La Colonia ever did. Nevertheless, La Colonia goes back to the 1940s, possibly even the 1930s.

Scalon goes back to the early 1960s, maybe even the 50s.

Scalon was born in the Port Hueneme housing projects.

Scalon Chiques formed over a series of events almost as old as COLONIA CHIQUES.

They did not have any car clubs associated with the forming of Scalon, nor did they organize in as a definitive manner.

Members of Scalon Chiques referred to their different generations as “chapters”.

Chapter One, the founding clique was the generation, which existed in the 1960s. These are the older Homeboys who are in their fifties and are considered the roots of Scalon Chiques. Many from Chapter 1 are torcidos, while others are now Resting In Peace.

In the 1960’s Chapter One lived predominantly in the area they named the Hueneme Projects. This was low rent housing that existed in the area of Hueneme Road and Ventura Road in Port Hueneme. The families existed on income produced from working as field laborers and in civil service. Adjacent to the area is the Port of Hueneme and the Naval Air Station. Near these projects was a park known as “Moranda Park” where handball courts became a popular hang out. These handball courts were later torn down.

Families slowly moved from the area of the “projects” into Oxnard. They settled in areas near Community Park, A Street, Bryce Canyon Avenue and West Spruce Street.

In the late 1970s, Scalon Chiques lost its unique single identification to two new developing clikas in the south area of Oxnard; Calle A, and Calle Paula. Up to this point in time there had been only raza who claimed El Escalon, and everyone else was from La Colonia.

Varrio members who live west of Saviers Road became known as Scalon Chiques Calle A, and east of Saviers Road became known as Scalon Chiques Calle Paula.

The Chapter Two homeboys existed and held up the varrio during the 1970s.

The original SCALON Chapter Two hung out at the Spruce Street Alley which ran all the way west to Ventura Road. This same alley became home grounds for CALLE A, which in both their placasos and name; they continued to reference themselves as SCALON.

In 1980, most of Chapter Two CALLE A, moved to Charles Street and the area of Perkins Road. Older gente from Chapter One remained in the area of A Street and Bryce Canyon Road, mostly behind the Liquor Cellar located at Channel Islands Blvd. and Saviers Rd.

The birth of SCALON CALLE A, took place in 1978 at a party in which raza who lived on A Street responded with a shout out of “A STREET” in response to a shout out by some gente from “COLONIA”. This party which occurred on Patterson and Island Boulevard marked the birth of CALLE A.

Paula Street varrio formed around 1977. A clique of raza attended Channel Islands High School and lived in the Blackstock north neighborhood. They were always kicking it around the Island Plaza shopping mall. They became known as the MAYFAIR BOYS so named after a store in the mall.

In 1979, they took on the name of Paula Street after a residential street where many of them lived. Paula Street vatos were jocks from Channel Islands High School who did not sport tacas but always had the shaved heads. They appeared to have been the first group of raza to have shaved heads in Oxnard while most other raza from the streets kept long hair. PAULA STREET was constantly having pleitos with people from the nearby Cal/Gisler neighborhood. In 1979 COLONIA placed a “green light” on PAULA STREET.

In 1983, PAULA STREET approached CALLE A with a peace proposition to go up together against COLONIA CHIQUES. CALLE A declined, and Paula Street then went to the vatos from EL RIO for the same reason, but the vatos from EL RIO declined as well. EL RIO eventually aligned with CALLE A to battle COLONIA CHIQUES.

What Side of L.A. do you claim?

IN THE WORLD OF VARRIOS, IT'S A TRIPPY THING HOW ALL "SIDES" AND "AREAS" BREAK DOWN IN A CITY LIKE L.A.

YOU GOT THE EAST SIDE, THE WEST SIDE, THE SOUTH SIDE, THE HARBOR AREA, SOUTH CENTRAL, THE SGV, THE 818, ETC, ETC.

BUT EACH ONE OF THOSE "SIDES" OR "AREAS" BREAK DOWN EVEN FURTHER, AND SOME VARRIOS CLAIM ONE SIDE WHEN THEY'RE COMPLETELY IN A DIFFERENT ZONE, OR EVEN CLAIM ONE THING, LIKE FOR EXAMPLE CLAIMING SOUTH CENTRAL, WHILE THE NEXT DOOR VARRIO CLAIMS SOUTH SIDE.

A RIVER, A FREEWAY, SOME HILLS, A CITY ZONE, THEY ALL SERVE TO BREAK DOWN THE CITY INTO DIFFERENT SIDES, AND IT'S ALL TRIPPY THING., I GUESS YOU GOT TO REALLY GET INTO IT TO MAKE SENSE OUT OF IT ALL, HOW IT ALL REALLY BREAKS DOWN.

IN OLD CITY TIMES YOU HAD WHAT THE GABACHOS CONSIDERED EAST L.A., BUT THE EAST L.A. OF THOSE OLD TIMES WAS NOT THE EAST L.A. OF PRESENT TIMES (MARAVILLA/BELVEDERE/CITY TERRACE), NOPES, THE EAST L.A. BACK THEN WAS LINCOLN HEIGHTS, AND THEN THE GREATER EAST SIDE WENT FROM ECHO PARK ELYSIAN HILLS AND TEMPLE BEAUDRY, EAST ACROSS L.A. THE RIVER AND BEYOND TO THE HILLS STRETCHING FROM EAGLE ROCK TO BELVEDERE. EVEN THE IMMEDIATE AREA KNOWN AS THE LOW BOTTOMS (SOUTH CENTRAL L.A.) JUST SOUTH OF DOWNTOWN WAS CONSIDERED EAST SIDE.

WITH THE TIMES, THINGS HAVE CHANGED, AND NOW EVERYONE CONSIDERS THE EAST SIDE TO BE EAST OF THE L.A. RIVER, FROM LINCOLN HEIGHTS TO WINTER GARDENS. BUT EVEN THE EAST SIDE TODAY IS BROKEN UP INTO EAST SIDE LOS AND EAST L.A. PROPER. EAST L.A. PROPER IS MARAVILLA/BELVEDERE, CITY TERRACE, EASTMONT AND WINTER GARDENS, THAT'S THE EXTENT OF UNINCORP EAST L.A., BUT THE EAST SIDE LOS AREA INCLUDES BOYLE HEIGHTS, LINCOLN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, ROSE HILLS, HAPPY VALLEY, EL SERENO, AND WYVERNWOOD. BUT THEN YOU HAVE THE REST OF THE OLD EAST SIDERS IN NORTH EAST L.A. STILL CLAIMING TO BE PART OF THE EAST SIDE., MAINLY THOSE FROM HIGHLAND PARK, CYPRESS PARK, GLASSELL PARK, ARROYO SECO, AND MOUNT WASHINGTON., BUT THEN YOU WOULD LEAVE OUT OTHER AREAS WHICH ARE CONSIDERED TO BE IN THE N.E.L.A. ZONE, BUT ARE NOT NECESSARILY "EAST SIDE"., AMONG THOSE ARE RIVERDALE, ATWATER AND ATWATER VILLAGE., WHICH BRINGS US TO THE QUESTION OF THE WEST SIDE., THERE IS WHAT IS CONSIDERED WEST SIDE, THEN THERE'S WEST LOS OR WEST L.A.,

WEST L.A. (WEST LOS) WOULD BE THOSE AREAS AND CITIES LIKE SANTA MONICA, VENICE, CULVER CITY AND SAWTELLE, AND THEN YOU THROW IN THE MIX THE COMMUNITIES OF MAR VISTA, PALMS, RANCHO PARK AND WEST LOS ANGELES PROPER., ALTHOUGH THEY ARE ALL TECHNICALLY WEST SIDE, THE WEST SIDE IS REALLY CONSIDERED TO BE THE AREA CLOSER TO L.A. LIKE WESTLAKE, RAMPART VILLAGE, PICO UNION, KOREA TOWN, FILIPINO TOWN, ECHO PARK, LOS FELIZ, SILVER LAKE, WEST ADAMS, MID CITY, WILSHIRE AND EVEN HOLLYWOOD., EVERYTHING NORTH OF THE 10 FREEWAY, ALL THE WAY TO THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS, THAT'S THE WEST SIDE, ALTHOUGH VARRIOS SOUTH OF THE 10 FREEWAY ALSO CONSIDER THEIR AREA PART OF THE WEST SIDE, LIKE THE ONES IN THE COMMNUNITIES OF OLYMPIC PARK, JEFFERSON AND MCMANUS.

BUT THIS AREA OF L.A. BETWEEN THE 10 FWY, THE HARBOR FWY, THE CENTURY FWY, AND THE 405 FWY CAN BE SOMEWHAT OF A DILEMA. MOST VARRIOS IN THIS AREA CLAIM WEST SIDE, BUT SOME CLAIM SOUTH CENTRAL, AND SOME EVEN CLAIM SOUTH SIDE, ALL THE WHILE THE WHOLE AREA IS CONSIDERED TO BE SOUTH WEST SOUTH CENTRAL AND NOT REALLY THE WEST SIDE OR EVEN WEST LOS., AND THEN YOU HAVE PLACES LIKE INGLEWOOD THAT CLAIM THEIR OWN SIDE. TO ME, SWLA IS REALLY PART OF THE GREATER SOUTH SIDE OF L.A. TOGETHER WITH EAST SOUTH CENTRAL AND THE WHOLE AREA ALL THE WAY TO ALAMEDA.

HERE IS WHERE IT GETS EVEN TRICKIER WITH THE WHOLE DEAL IN SOUTH SIDE L.A., YOU HAVE THOSE THAT CLAIM SOUTH SIDE, THEN YOU HAVE THE ONES THAT CLAIM SOUTH CENTRAL, THEN YOU HAVE SOME THAT CLAIM EAST SIDE. SOUTH SIDE L.A. GOES FROM THE LOW BOTTOMS ON THE NORTH END, TO WATTS ON THE SOUTH END, TO THE L.A. RIVER ON THE EAST END, INCLUDING VERNON, HUNTINGTON PARK, BELL, MAYWOOD, CUDAHY, SOUTH GATE, LYNWOOD, AND EVEN BELL GARDENS (EVEN THOUGH BXG ARE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER), BUT THAT'S ALL CONSIDRED SOUTH SIDE L.A., THE GRAND EXCEPTION IS COMPTON (THE HUB), THEY CLAIM THEIR OWN, AND COMMUNITIES LIKE WILLOBROOK AND LYNWOOD GARDENS ROLL WITH THE HUB.

WHEN YOU GET PAST BOMPTON, YOU GET INTO WHAT IS CONSIDERED THE HARBOR AREA TODAY, BUT IN REALITY THE O.G. HARBOR AREA USED TO BE SOLELY THE TOWNS OF SAN PEDRO, WILMINGTON, LONG BEACH AND HARBOR CITY, THAT WAS THE EXTENT OF THE HARBOR AREA, BUT WITH TIMES OTHER TOWNS GOT HITCHED UP TO THE LABEL AND NOW ROLL WITH THE HARBOR AREA HANDLE, LIKE LOMITA, CARSON, TORRANCE, THE HARBOR GATEWAY AND GARDENA., IT BECAME SO THAT EVEN HAWTHORNE, LAWNDALE AND REDONDO MAY CLAIM HXA. HERE'S THE THING, THE WHOLE HXA IS ALL PART OF THE GREATER SOUTH BAY AREA, AND THE SOUTH BAY INCLUDES PLACES LIKE LAKEWOOD, AND EVEN PARAMOUNT, BUT NEITHER OF THOSE PLACES CLAIM HXA. WHICH BRINGS US TO THE NEXT AREA WHICH INCLUDES PARAMOUNT, ARTESIA, HAWAIIAN GARDENS, BELLFLOWER AND DOWNEY. WHAT SIDE OR AREA DO THEY CLAIM? THEY'RE NOT HXA, THEY'RE NOT REALLY SOUTH SIDE L.A. AND THEY'RE NOT S.E.L.A. NEITHER (?) SO WHAT SIDE DO THEY CLAIM TO BE?

EVERYTHING NORTH OF THE 91 FWY AND EAST OF THE RIO HONDO IS CONSIDERED TO BE PROPER SOUTH EAST L.A., FROM NORWALK-LA MIRADA TO PICO RIVERA-WHITTIER IT'S ALL S.E.L.A.

THEN YOU GET INTO THE S.G.V. CAR, WHICH STRETCHES FROM PASADENA ALL THE WAY EAST TO LA VERNE, WITH POMONA ABSTAINING AND CLAIMING THEIR OWN. BUT I THINK THAT BASSETT, LA PUENTE, WALNUT, VALINDA, HACIENDA HEIGHTS AND ROWLAND SHOULD ALL FALL UNDER THEIR OWN HANDLE ~> THE PUENTE VALLEY HANDLE, BECAUSE THIS AREA IS WAY DISTANT FROM FAR OFF PLACES LIKE LA VERNE AND PASADENA. AND SURE THING, BOLEN, EL MONTE, SAN GABRIEL, AZUSA, SAN DIMAS, DUARTE, WEST COVINA AND ROSEMEAD + SOUTH S.G. SHOULD STAY S.G.V., BUT PASADENA IS NOT ALL THERE WITH THE MAIN SGV AREA, SO I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THAT.

THE LAST AREA YOU GOT LEFT IN L.A. IS THE NORTH VALLEY, A.K.A. THE 818 (SAN FERNANDO VALLEY), BUT THAT BREAKS DOWN INTO MID-VALLEY, WEST VALLEY, AND THE SAN FER/SYLMAR/PACAS AREA ON THE NORTHERN PART OF THE VALLEY. AND BURBANK, ALTHOUGH PART OF THE 818, THEY CAN NOT REALLY BE ON PAR WITH THE REST., BURBANK SHOULD MAYBE BE LUMPED IN TOGETHER WITH GLENDALE AND SUNLAND-TUJUNGA TO FORM THEIR OWN.. I DON'T KNOW.. I'M JUST SAYING.. SOME PLACES ARE HARD TO SQUARE IN WITH THE MAIN SIDE OR AREA.. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

POMONA 12 STREET SHARKYS

Pomona is a city of 160,000 about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. Founded in the late 19th Century as a railroad spur for nearby citrus groves, the city's economy was historically married to annual fruit harvests. Migrant workers flooded the town, mainly settling in its southern section.

The south part of town developed an especially dangerous strip along 12th Street that was punctuated by a number of bordellos and speakeasies. Gang toughs from other hard bit railroad towns like El Monte and Casa Blanca section of Riverside ventured down the red car trolley line to the strip, and after a night of carousing often battle with the locals. Young Latino Pomona men banded into their own gang called 12th Street to help them with these brawls.

In the 30's, as the gang grew to two dozen or so, members of 12th Street were regularly making police blotters for stealing cars and sticking up stores. And now they did their own incursions into other gang areas; sometimes even to the clubs on Whittier Boulevard in the Maravilla section of East LA. In the 1940's, members rushed to East L.A. to take part in the Zoot Suit Riots.

By the 1950's, Pomona 12th Street gang was a multi-generational band that fought rival gangs from El Monte and Riverside. And they went Hollywood. In 1954 ,Pomona gang members were the subject of a short film, Gang Boy, the true story of a truce between 12th Street and a white motorcycle based gang that had formed on the north side of town. With help of police, gang members proclaimed they were rejecting violence, instead volunteering to help the community's children. It was a short time after this that an especially ferocious generation of 12th Street adopted the name Sharks, the name of the Puerto Rican gang that battled the white Jets gang in the play West Side Story; this tag was soon adopted as the nickname for the gang.

In the 1960's, younger 12th Street members in an area off Hamilton Boulevard -isolated by railroad tracks, vacant lots and an industrial district-rebelled and broke off from 12th Street, forming their own gang. Because they were a young crowd, a Cherries generation, they came to call themselves Cherryville. Because the gang drew from an insular four block crescent with a mere 75 homes, it was more cohesive then its larger Sharkie's neighbors.

By 1970, 12th Street had a membership of about 100, while Cherryville claimed about 40. Attending the same two schools, Pomona and Garey High School, the gangs were constantly in conflict. At wits end because of the violence, the Pomona City Council held a number of peace conferences between the gangs. They helped the gangs elect leaders, and threw city sponsored dances for the teens. In an effort to push the two gangs into athletics, the city constructed two parks within respective turfs, naming one Cherryville Park and the other Sharkie Park.

By 1989,both parks had deteriorated into heavily vandalized gang hang-outs, central locations not only from which to plan raids on each other, but also for each other to be raided. Almost every patch of grass in each park, at one time or another had been watered by the blood of a stabbing or gunshot victim.

In an effort to change their gangster haven images, the city renamed Cherryville Park as Hamilton Park, and Sharkie Park to Madison Park. The city also decided 12th Street needed a new name after two skateboarding sixteen-year-olds were gunned down on its sidewalks. City officials changed 12th Street to Cabrillo Street, a nod to 16th Century explorer and perceived Latino hero Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo.

Thee renown VARRIO SOUTH LOS is in the heart of South Los Angeles, criss-crossed by the 105 & 110 freeways..
In fact, the varrio takes its name from the old unincorp area named South Los Angeles, which roughly goes from (W) Vermont Ave, (E) Central Ave, (N) 110Th St, (S) 120Th Street.

The varrio today is centered more around Imperial Hwy and Main Street, by the railroad tracks. Its eastern border today would probably be more like San Pedro Street, but no longer reaching Central Avenue.

SOxLOS is a very old varrio, and it has remained strong over the decades in the predominant Black south side of Los Angeles. Aside from its many strong cliques, it is said that they have sponsored other start up varrios.. varrios like BARRIO POBRE, CARNALES & CV 117. The BARRIO POBRE in Lynwood are the sponsors for Barrio Pobre in Compton, but the question remains as to who started first,
BP in Lynwood, or BP in Long Beach. (?) The BP in L.B. has been around since at least the 1970's, and they have traditionally been real crazy.

SOxLOS also has a very strong varrio in San Diego County, in the City of San Marcos, where they are enemies with San Marco's WOLF PACK & GHOST TOWN gangs.

In L.A. SOxLOS enemies are many, including their old rivalry with Florencia 13 & Watts Varrios.

WATTS VARRIOS

THE SOUTH LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY OF WATTS IS MORE OR LESS TUCKED IN BETWEEN (N) FIRESTONE BLVD., (E) ALAMEDA STREET, (S) IMPERIAL HWY. / 105 CENTURY FREEWAY, (W) CENTRAL AND SUCCESS AVENUES.

THE BLACKS REFERRED TO WATTS AS MUD TOWN, AND THE THE WATTS QUARTER WAS THE MEXICAN SIDE OF TOWN, TUCKED IN ON THE SOUTHEAST PART OF TOWN.

WATTS IS ONE OF THE MOST INFAMOUS COMMUNITIES OF LOS ANGELES, HEARD ABOUT NATION WIDE; MOST NOTORIOUS IN HISTORY MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE 1965 RIOTS THAT SPARKED OFF THERE, AND THEN LATER ON BECAUSE IT AQUIRED A ROUGH NEIGHBORHOOD REPUTATION WITH ITS STREET GANGS.

IN 1910, WATTS STARTED OUT AS ITS OWN CITY BEFORE IT GOT ANNEXED IN 1026 INTO THE METROPOLIS OF GREATER LOS ANGELES. WATTS AT FIRST, WAS A PLACE WHERE BOTH BLACKS AND MEXICANS COULD COME BUY A HOME BY ESCAPING THE SHY-STY REAL ESTATE LAWS ENACTED BY L.A. CITY PLANNERS, WHICH SEGREGATED NEIGHBORHOOD ENCLAVES BY RACE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. BY THE 1940’s WHEN WWII WAS IN FULL BLAST, LABOR WAS IN HIGH DEMAND, AND SO MANY HAD FLOCKED TO CALIFORNIA FROM ALL KINDS OF PLACES, AND SO TOO THE POPULATION OF WATTS SWELLED DRAMATICALLY. SOON THE AREA BECAME OVERCROWDED, BUT THEN AT THE END OF THE WAR, JOBS BECAME SCARCE, COUPLED WITH THE SCARSE HOUSING, SEGREGATION PRACTICES, AND COMMUNITY NEGLECT BY THE POWERS TO BE, SOON, ALL OF THESE THINGS WOULD PUT ITS EVERLASTING MARK ON THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF WATTS FOLKS. TO TOP IT ALL, RESIDENTS HAD TO ENDURE POLICE BRUTALITY; HENCE THE REASON WHY SHIT HIT THE FAN IN 1965. AFTER THE RIOTS WHITE FLIGHT BEGAN IN EARNEST, AND BLACK FOLKS WHO HAD BETTER MEANS ALSO MOVED OUT IN NUMBERS, SO THAT’S HOW THE COMMUNITY BECAME THE GHETTO WHICH MOST PEOPLE ASSOCIATE THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITH WHEN THEY HEAR THE NAME WATTS. BUT IN FACT, WATTS ALREADY HAD BEGUN ITS DESCENT SINCE BACK IN THE 1940’s WHEN THE HOUSING COMPLEXES OF IMPERIAL COURTS, JORDAN DOWNS, AND NICKERSON GARDENS WERE BUILT TO MOVE PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR OWN HOMES, AND INTO GOVERNMENT HOUSING. AND IN THE PROCESS DESTROYING WHOLE NEIGHBORHOODS AND DISPLACING WHOLE FAMILIES FROM THOSE AREAS IN ORDER TO BUILD THE PROJECTS. POLITICAL FORCES AT WORK CREATED THE CONDITIONS FOR WHAT WAS TO EXPLODE LATER, THE SAME COMBUSTIBLE FACTORS LIKE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE CITY, SO TOO IN WATTS, A DRAMATIC RISE IN NEIGHBORHOOD STREET TRIBES BEGAN; LATER TO BECOME SOME OF THE MOST RENOWN BLACK AND MEXICAN HARDCORE GANGS OF L.A.

SOME OF THE FIRST GANGS IN WATTS WHERE OF THE BARRIO KIND. THE MEXICANS HAD BEEN IN WATTS SINCE ITS BEGINNINGS IN THE EARLY 1900’s, AND THEY WERE PREDOMINANT IN THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF WATTS KNOWN AS “THE QUARTER,” A.k.a. LA COLONIA WATTS.

IN PRESENT TIMES, THE QUARTER ZONE REMAINS AS UNINCORPORATED WATTS, AND IS PRESENTLY KNOWN AS COLONIA WATTS AND NUTHOOD WATTS IN THE SOUTHEAST SECTOR OF THE COMMUNITY, TUCKED IN BETWEEN MONA BLVD, ALAMEDA AND IMPERIAL.

WATTS “MUDTOWN” BOUNDARIES WHERE MORE OR LESS. (N) 103RD STREET, (S) IMPERIAL AVENUE, (W) WILLOWBROOK AVENUE, AND (W) ALAMEDA STREET.

DURING THE 1920s THE QUARTER, TOGETHER WITH THE WATTS GARDENS (JARDIN) NEIGHBORHOODS GAVE RISE TO THE VERY FIRSTS WATTS GANGS, BEARING THE SAME NAME OF THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD BARRIO AREA. WHEN THE ZOOT SUIT RIOTS ERUPTED IN 1943, BOTH OF THESE GANGS PACHUCOS JOINED IN THE STREET BATTLES AGAINST MARAUDING U.S. SERVICEMEN IN THE STREETS OF L.A.
BUT JARDINE WAS DESTINED TO FADE AWAY, THE POWERS TO BE DICTATED THAT THE BARRIO BE RAZED IN ORDER TO BUILD THE IMPERIAL COURTS PROJECTS OVER THE SAME AREA. AND SO ITS FAMILIES WERE DISPLACED, AND WITH THE TIC TOCS OF TIME, SOON THERE WAS NO MORE JARDIN PEOPLE TO REPRESENT. BUT BY NOW OTHER CHICANO BARRIO GANGS HAD COME UP. HICKORY WATTS ROSE UP IN THE PALOMAR BARRIO AREA OF NORTHEAST WATTS, AND ALSO THE NEAR-BY WILLOWBROOK GANG. WITH EVERY PASSING YEAR MORE AND MORE GANGS WERE SETTING UP AND GETTING ESTABLISHED IN WATTS, COMPTON, AND SOUTH LOS ANGELES. BOTH BLACK AND MEXICAN GANGS WERE POPPING UP EVERYWHERE.

THE QUARTER GANG EVENTUALLY HAD ITS INTERNAL PROBLEMS DO DEAL WITH, AND A SPLIT OCCURRED. A FRACTION OF ITS MEMBERS WHICH HEADQUARTERED AT GRAPE STREET BROKE OFF AND CREATED ITS OWN GANG, NAMING IT WATTS VARRIO GRAPE, WHILE THE REMAINDER AT LA COLONIA TOOK UP HEADQUARTERS AT WEIGAND AVENUE AND NAMED THEIR GANG WEIGAND COLONIA WATTS.

IN TIME, WITH SO MANY CLIQUES AND NUMBERS, MORE BREAK OFF AND SPLITS WOULD OCCUR; ALL THE WHILE MORE GANGS WOULD RISE UP, AND BEFORE THE END OF THE CENTURY THE ROLL CALL LIST OF GANGS IN WATTS WOULD RISE TO OVER TWENTY. THE CHICANO GANG LIST ALONE INCLUDED THOSE OF WEIGAND COLONIA WATTS, WATTS VARRIO GRAPE, WATTS VARRIO NUEZ, HICKORY WATTS, ELM STREET WATTS, IVY STREET WATTS, SOUTH SIDE WATTS 13, DIEZ LINEAS / TEN LINES WATTS, VILLAGE BOYS, VIA LOCOTES, MORTON TOWN STONERS, KRAZY MEXICAN TOWN, AND THE OUTSIDER FIFTH & HILL GANG; EACH GANG WITH ITS OWN SET OF CLIQUES; SO MANY BLACK AND CHICANO GANGS OVERLAPPING IN SUCH A SMALL TINY AREA THAT IT WAS TO BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR ALL TO GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER, LEAST OF ALL WITH THE NEIGHBORING GANGS FROM FLORENCE, SOUTH LA, COMPTON, LYNWOOD AND BEYOND.

ONE HAS TO BE BOTH A REAL TUFF KRAZY MOFO, AND A TACTFUL POLITICIAN TO NAVIGATE AND SURVIVE THESE STREETS.

SO I’LL LEAVE IT HERE WITH THE WATTS STORY, BUT IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO SUPPLY 411 OR CRITIQUE TO THIS POST, DO SO IN A CONSTRUCTIVE MANNER, KEEP IT POSITIVE.

VIVA WATTS!
